Read Time: 1 Minute

One of the biggest township’s in South Africa, Soweto, has become a popular stop for tourists visiting the country. With its diverse culture, rich history and world-famous name, the township of Soweto plays host to a world-class marathon.

The Old Mutual Soweto Marathon dubbed “The People’s Race”, not only encourages South Africans to learn more about the rich heritage of Soweto but also exposes international runners to one of the most vibrant, historically significant parts of South Africa. A marathon circuit like no other.

Runners pass six significant heritage sites on the marathon route, including:

  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (the third largest hospital in the world)
  •  Walter Sisulu Square (birthplace of 1955's Freedom Charter that emphasized a non-racial society, liberty, and individual rights)
  • Regina Mundi Catholic Church (also referred to as "the people's church" due to its role in the anti-apartheid struggle)
  • Morris Isaacson High School
  • Vilakazi Street
  • Hector Pieterson Memorial.

Old Mutual has been a headlining sponsor since 2015. The partnership seeks to leverage the unifying power of sport and to demonstrate the similarities between physical and financial fitness. Both of which require clear goals, commitment, motivation and support. We believe that our sponsorship can add more value to the running community while financially educating the world of runners.
